African food is hard to find around here. A new family has taken over the old Indian restaurant on Goldberg, and they are serving African food in addition to Indian cuisine. It’s one of those places that looks like nothing from the outside, but once you get the food inside you, you’ll really enjoy it. Definitely worth trying out.
Vanni Restaurant is in the Waldenbucherstrasse 22, and it’s a little tricky to get to, since the street is one way in the wrong direction for most of us. No website yet.
For appetizers we enjoyed a chicken soup and falafel. The soup was light and delicious, with large chunks of chicken and vegetables. My falafel was a small meal in itself, since it was 4 nice pieces of falafel with a side salad. Yummy. I love falafel. The flatbread with the appetizers was fabulous, and had a little special spice/salt on it.
For our main dishes I ordered Butter Chicken while DH ate Zigni Lamm. The lamb was mildly spicy and served on a crepe-like bread, with a choice of curried veggies or couscous. DH recommends the couscous rather than the veggies, since the curry flavor overwhelmed the veggies.
My Butter Chicken, a very mild curry, was served with basmati rice. It really matched my cravings that night, and with the falafel appetizer, I was able to take most of it home for a second meal 2 days later. Just as good the second time.
